Carter's Carnival Party

We celebrated Carter's 3rd birthday with lots of wonderful friends and family last Saturday. We're thankful that it wasn't raining, but it was a little chilly for an outdoor carnival. The kids didn't seem to mind and the birthday boy was on cloud nine the whole day. We'd been working on the carnival games for several weeks, so we were relieved to have it all come together.

Reanna and Carter practiced their bowling skills...Carter preferred to kick the ball.Reed scoped out the ring toss. The beanbag toss kept them busy for awhile. The duck pond was a huge hit--I think the kids enjoyed throwing the ducks in the water and splashing each other more than anything. Poor Reed even went for a swim!Mal got her face painted. And the little ones were fascinated by the plinko game. Aunt Lou was a huge hit with her newly discovered talent of balloon creations. Of course, no carnival is complete without a bunch of cheap, junky prizes! Addie tried on her silly glasses.Mal and Reese showed off their little cars.By then, Carter was ready for some cake. Once again, Grandma outdid herself with an awesome carnival cake--complete with an alligator roller coaster, ferris wheel and carousel. Thanks Grandma...it was YUMMY!Blowing out the candles!Yummy alligator cake = green tongue! Then it was time to open presents! He was truly spoiled and we're getting 1-2 new gifts out each day to spread out the fun.And after most of the kids left, Carter had to try out his big gifts. Thanks for the car, Grandma and Papa!He loves his new scooter, now he can cruise with Mal. Thanks Grammy and Crappaw! And one last cute picture of Asher and Brynn--just because they're so darn cute. They had their own little party inside.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Grammy, Crappaw, Aunt Lou and Unc for all of their help in the weeks leading up to and the day of the party. They sewed bean bags, cut out games, painted, drilled, stapled, babysat, learned to make balloon animals, the list goes on and on. We couldn't have done it without you all, thanks a million! We love you!

Carter turns 3!

On October 20, our big boy Carter turned three years old. I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact that he's been with us for three years already. He is a tremendous joy (and an occasional headache) all wrapped up into this adorable package. Apparently daddy was an ornery little boy, so I think we're beginning to experience the payback of Chris' childhood. It could be a wild ride, but I know that we'll never be short on laughter.

All About Carter:

Weight: I'm guessing around 38-39 lbs.--we see the dr. this week, so I'll update then.

Height: I'm guessing about 40 inches.

Food: EVERYTHING. The kid is definitely an eater. His favorites include pizza, spaghetti, all fruits, milk, orange juice and sweets of all kinds. Last week at Pizza Hut he ate three pieces of pizza and 2 cinnamon sticks! It never fails though...the minute we finish with a meal, Carter asks for a "snack." He pretty much lives for snacks.

Milestones: He talks very clearly and it amazes me how we can carry on a complete conversation with him. He knows his ABC's, all of the colors and shapes (even octagon!), counts to 20, sings 15-20 songs, is fully potty-trained (except overnight), and he just sits and absorbs all the conversation around him and then spits it right back out at us.

Misc. update: Carter LOVES to be outside. I'm afraid he may go stir crazy as the weather turns colder and we're stuck inside. Currently, his favorite sport is baseball. We have a t-ball set, but he much prefers to swing at live pitches...and he can HIT the ball! He really loves all sports in general...including bowling. He also loves climbing on his swingset, riding his trike and hanging out with other kids...he's definitely a social bug.

Carter is also a lover. The last few months, he will say "Mom, I love you" at the most random times. I'll bet he tells me this 5-10 times daily...that will melt a momma's heart. He loves to snuggle on the couch or in bed with mommy & daddy and still offers hugs and kisses regularly (I know our days are numbered on that one). Sometime in the last few months, he's dropped the "mommy" or "momma" and now I'm just "mom." Why does that make me feel older??

Back to the orneriness...he is a very gassy child (he didn't get that from me) and he loves to announce "I tooted!" That makes this mommy want to crawl under a rock when we're in public. Or if we're in a public restroom I'll always let him go potty first, then he'll announce to everyone in the room, "mommy do you need to go poopy too?" And he's always saving his "treasures" in the toilet for me to see how big they are. Nice. Are you noticing a theme here???

I think one of the things that makes me most proud of Carter (as tears fill my eyes), is what an incredible big brother he's become. From the first day we brought Asher home, Carter has been very helpful and loving towards the baby. If Asher's crying, Carter runs to find a binky, or he'll say "Maybe he's tired, mom?" Every morning while we're getting ready, Asher sits/lays in our bed. When Carter finishes his breakfast, he always climbs up into our bed with Ash and snuggles or tickles him and they have quite the conversation. Sometimes I'll just peek out of the bathroom and just watch them...Asher adores Carter as well and I truly hope they become best friends someday.

On the morning of his birthday, we let him open his presents from us.Little brother supervised the unwrapping. And Carter got to enjoy a very special birthday donut with sprinkles. It's good to be three!Happy birthday, little man. We love you bunches!

Playing catch-up

As you've noticed, I'm starting nearly every post with "two weeks ago" or "a couple weekends ago"--I'm running behind!! It's the story of my life. October has been absolutely CRAZY at our house...but I'm hoping to dig out very soon. Somebody at our house turned THREE last week, so we have LOTS of pictures to share of that excitement. For now...here's one shot of our little goblins hangin' in the crib.

Sunnyside Pumpkin Patch

After such a great experience last fall, we returned to the Sunnyside Pumpkin Patch two weekends ago to find "the" pumpkin. It was a windy, chilly day, but we didn't let that hinder our fun. There are a ton of activities at this place and we spent almost two hours there...we could have been there all afternoon!

We stopped to visit the animals first. Carter was interested, but kept his distance. If the animals approached the fence, Carter backed up quickly.Next, we moved on to something new for Sunnyside this year. They built up a big dirt hill and layed some really slick plastic down all four sides of the hill making some really fast slides! Carter was all about the slides. I helped him up the big hill once and after that, he was scurrying up it all by himself.Mom, dad and Asher all took trips down the slide as well...so much fun! After dragging Carter away from the slides, we moved on to the corn maze. They have a mini maze for little people, so we started there. Carter was our leader and blazed his way through the whipping stalks. More than once we had to holler at Mr. Independent to wait up for pokey mom and dad. Somehow we crossed over into the big maze and Carter led us really deep into it...Read: We were LOST!! Daddy took over being the leader and we finally found our way back out. Next we headed out for a hayrack ride around the patch. Asher got really vocal on the ride, so mommy had to ask the nice horseys to stop so we could exit the ride and get Mr. Grouchy a bottle. Lovely. Once the baby's belly was full, we took a wagon out to the patch to hunt for a pumpkin. We've come to realize that Carter equates Asher's ears to handles. Every time he "holds" his baby brother, he holds him by the ears. Ash will thank him for that later.

On our way out, we passed some HUGE pumpkins and stopped for a photo op.As my luck would run, my camera stopped working while we were out in the patch. So I missed out on pics of Carter picking and cutting his prized pumpkin off the vine. Momma was not a happy camper about the camera, but Carter did find a winner and the camera somehow fixed itself when we got out of the patch. Here it is!Pumpkin in tow, we stopped off at a few more activities before heading home.

Beanbag toss--a.k.a. photo stand-in.Putt-putt.Mini pumpkin and gourd slingshot. And a corn crib!! What a genious idea! They filled this sandbox with corn kernels and nailed a bunch of funnels and gadgets to the wall and the kids had a hay-day scooping and dumping corn. Ash even got in on the fun.And finally, a family pic before we leave. Asher is hiding under daddy's coat...BRRRR!

Wedding in the woods

The weekend after Katy & Ryan's wedding, my other cousin got married. Nate & Ashley decided on a "Wedding in the Woods" and we all traveled to Platte City, MO and spent the weekend at the Basswood Resort. The weather didn't quite cooperate for us to fully enjoy all the fun outdoor activities at the resort, but we had a great time with the family and will definitely try to go back to Basswood sometime.
Mom, dad, Lindsay, Jay, Chris, myself and our boys (plus 3 dogs!) all stayed in a 8-person sleeper cabin. It was nice, but VERY cozy...Lindsay and Jay got stuck sleeping in the loft and they had to lay down on the mattress to get dressed--there was very little head room. Carter on the front porch.Nate & Ashley had originally wanted to get married at sunrise on Saturday morning--outside by the lake. We are very thankful they pushed that back a little bit to 10am...even at that time, I think the temps were in the 30's! Brrrrrr. Luckily it was a quick 10 minute ceremony, and we were back inside for a delicious, warm brunch. Here's the happy couple... Carter and Great-grandpa at the ceremony.Asher snuggled up with Aunt Lou.My grandparents inside the lodge.Mom and Aunt Deb.There was a pool table in the lodge and Carter was fascinated by it. I think he sat and stared at the table for close to an hour while the big boys were playing. After brunch, we all took naps and Great Grandma and Great Grandpa stopped by to play with the kids.Asher thought they were pretty funny. Then we ventured back outside to the HUGE playground at the resort. It was still chilly, but never too chilly to play!Aunt Lou and Carter racing down the slides.Saturday evening we had a BBQ back at the lodge and enjoyed some more quality time with the family.

Asher snuggled with Crappaw.Sisters!Carter and Asher both trying to fit on Great Grandma's tiny lap.Four beautiful ladies: Aunt Deb, Aunt Mary, cousin Niki and her daughter Naia.Ash partied 'til his pants fell off! Before we left on Sunday, we took a few family pics. Here's our whole fam inside our cabin.
And the four of us by the lake.
We had a great weekend and want to thank Rick and Mary for hosting us all for the fun!
